Since 2006, there will be no collection of dead birds to determine whether they are carriers of WNV, in compliance with reccommendations from experts.
The purpose of collecting birds was to assess the presence of the virus in Québec regions. Past results indicate that the virus is present in certain regions - Montérégie, Laval, Lanaudière, Laurentides and Outaouais - which public health officials are now aware of.
As part of avian flu monitoring, however, the public is invited to report any dead wild or domestic birds they find or to request specific information by calling Services Québec at one of the following numbers, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily.
Québec region: 418 644-4545
Montréal region: 514 644-4545
Toll-free number: 1 877 644-4545
The purpose of this measure is to identify any situation that may require the collection of these birds and their subsequent analysis. It will ensure close monitoring of the avian flu situation.
If you discover a dead bird, we recommend you do not handle it before contacting Services Québec during business hours.
If you have to move the bird before contacting Services Québec, however, we advise you to follow these steps:
